In a case that has caught national attention, the individual charged with shooting two National Guard personnel in Washington, D.C., made a remarkable first appearance in court—while still hospitalized. Rahmanullah Lakanwal faces multiple allegations, including premeditated murder and assault with intent to kill, after an incident near the White House last week. Sadly, one of the victims, Sergeant Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her injuries the following day, while another, Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, continues to fight for his life.
The court's magistrate, Judge Renee Raymond, decided to keep Lakanwal behind bars without bail, emphasizing that no conditions could ensure public safety. The judge pointed out that Lakanwal traveled from across the country, armed and with what appeared to be a specific, dangerous purpose.
During Tuesday’s court session, Lakanwal was visible on video, lying in a hospital bed covered mostly by a blanket. When questioned, he mumbled his name, appeared to squint painfully, and admitted to experiencing pain, stating he couldn’t open his eyes fully. The proceedings also involved an interpreter translating from Pashto into English, highlighting the language barrier.
Defense attorney Terrence Austin argued that his client should be released before trial, citing the long delay in charging Lakanwal and noting he has no prior criminal history. Conversely, prosecutors insisted that the gravity of the charges—especially the first-degree murder—necessitated detention. They also highlighted Lakanwal’s limited ties to Washington, D.C., and the inability to guarantee community safety if he were released.
Notably, Lakanwal had been residing in Washington state with his family for several years. He initially moved to the U.S. in 2021, after working with American forces in Afghanistan, a few years before the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region.
Throughout the hearing, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro was visibly present, sitting at the front of the courtroom with a marshal nearby. After the session, she held a press conference outside, downplaying any community connections Lakanwal might have, and deferring the decision on whether the death penalty should be pursued to higher authorities.
Lakanwal’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 14. As investigations continue, prosecutors released a detailed affidavit indicating that he allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. According to court documents, law enforcement traced Lakanwal’s movements through surveillance footage—from near the Farragut West metro station to the scene of the shooting after a one-minute stay on the sidewalk.
The video evidence reportedly shows the two soldiers talking shortly before they were shot, with Lakanwal seen chasing and allegedly firing at a witness afterward. The surveillance images also captured him bending over the victims immediately following the shooting.
