Pressure's on! Amanda Anisimova steps onto the court at the 2026 Australian Open, carrying the weight of heightened expectations. This year, she kicks off her campaign with a match against Simona Waltert, the Swiss player ranked 86th in the world, who's making her debut in the women's singles main draw at the AO.
But here's where it gets interesting: If Anisimova advances, she could face Katerina Siniakova and then Sofia Kenin, the 27th seed and AO 2020 champion, in the second and third rounds. Talk about a challenging path!
Moving further into the tournament, the fourth seed, Anisimova, could meet 13th seed Linda Noskova in the fourth round. Her projected quarterfinal opponent? Fellow American and sixth seed Jessica Pegula. The road to the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup doesn't get any easier, as Anisimova might then have to overcome top seed and two-time AO champion Sabalenka, followed by a final showdown against either second seed Swiatek or third seed Coco Gauff.
Anisimova, like any seasoned pro, knows better than to get ahead of herself. She's focused on the present, stating, "It's a new Grand Slam. I'm just really taking it one match at a time… everyone is going to be very difficult to face here, but I'm looking forward to it."
And this is the part most people miss: She's using the pressure as fuel. Anisimova explains, "Going into this year, I'm just thinking about how I can get that extra edge [and] improve as an athlete. There are expectations, but I use them as motivation."
