Discord is making a significant move to enhance safety by rolling out a worldwide age verification process beginning next month. This means all accounts will automatically be set to a "teen-appropriate" experience unless users can prove they are adults. This initiative is a response to growing international legal pressure for stricter online child safety measures.
But here's where it gets controversial... For users who aren't verified as adults, access to age-restricted servers and channels will be blocked. They'll also be unable to participate in Discord's live "stage" channels and will encounter content filters for anything deemed graphic or sensitive. Even receiving friend requests from unfamiliar users will trigger warning prompts, and direct messages from unknown individuals will be rerouted to a separate inbox. And this is the part most people miss: even if you were already a member of an age-restricted server, you'll need to complete the age check to continue participating or viewing its content. Savannah Badalich, Discord's global head of product policy, explained that these servers will appear as a black screen until verification is complete, and joining new age-restricted servers will be impossible without it.
This isn't the first time Discord has experimented with age verification. They previously tested it in the UK and Australia, where some users ingeniously bypassed the system using a photo mode in the game Death Stranding. While Discord quickly patched this loophole, they acknowledge that users will likely continue to find creative ways to circumvent the checks, and the company plans to actively address these vulnerabilities.

This document will be processed by a third-party vendor, but Discord states that images of these documents are deleted swiftly, often immediately after age confirmation. Following the October data breach, Discord switched to a new vendor and emphasizes they are not performing biometric scanning or facial recognition, but rather facial estimation, and that no personal information like name or city is retained.
Here's a clever alternative: Some users might not need to go through either of these verification methods at all! Discord is also implementing an age inference model. This system analyzes metadata such as the types of games a user plays, their activity patterns on Discord, and behavioral signals like typical working hours or overall time spent on the platform. If the model is highly confident that a user is an adult, they will bypass the manual verification steps.
Badalich clarified that for the majority of users, their experience will remain unchanged. The new age assurance measures are primarily aimed at content that is explicitly adult or inappropriate for minors. She stated, "A majority of people are not necessarily looking at explicit or graphic content. When we say that, we're really talking about things that are truly adult content [and] age inappropriate for a teen. So, the way that it will work is a majority of people are not going to see a change in their experience."
