A former UFC fighter has been arrested in a major drug bust, with authorities seizing nearly $2 million worth of cocaine and other illegal substances. The case has raised questions about the involvement of athletes in the criminal underworld.
According to a report by CTV News, Montreal police confirmed the arrest of Alex Garcia, a former welterweight fighter, along with two other individuals. The raid resulted in the seizure of 102 grams of cocaine, valued at $1.7 million USD ($2.3 million CAD), and a significant amount of other drugs, including 20 liters of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), approximately five kilograms of heroin, and $306,000 in cash. Three firearms and two vehicles were also recovered.
The investigation, launched in July 2025, revealed that the Toronto area was being used as a supply source for the drugs, which were then resold at a higher price in Greater Montreal. Michele Laddaga, 49, and Victor Julio Sanchez Medrano, 45, were also arrested as part of the investigation. Police are still searching for two other suspects, Rattana Sem and Véronique Plouffe, who are currently on the run.
Garcia's promotional record stands at 5-5, with 10 fights inside the octagon against notable opponents like Sean Strickland, Neil Magny, and Tim Means. The 38-year-old, along with Sanchez Medrano, is facing charges of drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime, while Laddaga is charged with drug trafficking and possession. This case highlights the complex relationship between athletes and the criminal justice system, raising questions about the potential risks and consequences for those involved in the sports world.
