In a memorable moment at Melbourne Park on Monday, Francesco Maestrelli emerged victorious against Terence Atmane in the opening round of the Australian Open. The emotions were palpable as the young Italian fought back tears of joy.
"This is incredibly emotional for me. I’ve dreamed about competing in matches like these for so long, and participating in my first major main draw feels surreal," Maestrelli expressed to ATPTour.com. "Winning a five-set match on my debut? I never expected that, and it fills me with excitement and happiness."
This match marked not only Maestrelli’s first entry into a major tournament but also his second-ever match at the ATP Tour level. His only previous encounter on the tour took place back in October 2022 in Florence. Now, at just 23 years old, he finds himself stepping into the limelight.
In a thrilling next round, Maestrelli is set to face none other than the legendary Novak Djokovic, a ten-time champion at the Australian Open. The young Italian candidly admitted that he has watched Djokovic play countless times throughout his career.
"When I learned I had the opportunity to compete against Djokovic, I couldn’t believe it—it will surely be one of the most exhilarating moments of my life," Maestrelli remarked. "It’s surreal to see my name next to his in an official match. I’ll do my best to win, even though I know it's going to be a monumental challenge."
Despite being a four-time ATP Challenger titleholder, Maestrelli has yet to practice with Djokovic or engage in any formal discussions with him. He has exchanged casual greetings, saying "Ciao!" to the Serbian star on a few occasions, but now he must prepare for their first-ever match-up on Thursday.
"Djokovic is a player with very few weaknesses," Maestrelli analyzed. "Preparing for this match will be extremely challenging, but I plan to give everything I have on the court, even though I know it won't be easy."
Maestrelli showcased his talent early in his career by breaking into the Top 200 of the PIF ATP Rankings at just 19 years old in September 2022. However, moving into the Top 150 has taken him over three years of hard work and perseverance.
"Climbing the ranks isn’t simple. Achieving significant results at a young age can be easier since you’re less familiar with the Tour's challenges. But reality hits when results aren’t forthcoming. You need to endure tough moments, push through difficult times, and focus on improving yourself," Maestrelli reflected.
Since he turned 16, Maestrelli has trained at the Italian Tennis Federation’s local center. However, two years ago, he made a significant decision to relocate approximately two hours from Pisa to Sinalunga to train under the guidance of coaches Giovanni Galuppo and Gabrio Castrichella.
"This change was exciting; it opened up a new chapter for me, and it has been wonderful to share these experiences with my trainers," Maestrelli shared. "I admit I was nervous about making such a big change, but I felt it was the right time. Looking back two years later, I can confidently say it was a wise choice."
Outside of tennis, Maestrelli enjoys playing basketball, particularly admiring Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball for his creativity on the court. He is also a devoted supporter of his hometown football team, Pisa Sporting Club.
"I consider myself a regular guy striving to excel in what I love—tennis. I'm determined to give my all, and being tall, I’ll aim to serve as fast as possible, especially since I know Djokovic might have the upper hand in rallies. But who knows? Let’s find out!"
