Has Venezuela Lost Its Allies? Russia, China, and the Changing Dynamics (2026)

Is Venezuela's once-solid alliance with Russia and China crumbling?

As the US ramps up pressure on Venezuela, its key allies seem to be offering little more than symbolic support. With the US deploying military might in the Caribbean, including nuclear-powered submarines and spy planes, the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, might be questioning his true friends.

For years, Venezuela enjoyed political, financial, and military backing from its allies, China and Russia. This support began under former President Hugo Chávez and continued with Maduro. However, experts argue that this backing has now become largely symbolic, with statements of support but little concrete aid.

But here's where it gets controversial... The US claims its military actions are targeting drug trafficking, but many, including Maduro, believe the real goal is regime change. So, what has caused this shift in support from Venezuela's allies?

Prof Fernando Reyes Matta suggests that Venezuela's priority has decreased for both Beijing and Moscow, especially with Trump back in the White House. Russia's focus is on its war in Ukraine, and China is navigating its complex relationship with Trump's administration.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, its resources have been strained, leaving less support for allies. Moscow's long-standing allies in the Middle East, Syria, and Iran, have also faced similar challenges.

And this is the part most people miss... China's support for Maduro could potentially jeopardize its recent diplomatic gains with the US. With Trump's tariffs and the tense US-China relations, Beijing might not want to risk further tariffs by defending Maduro.

Additionally, Venezuela's economic collapse and the decline of its oil industry have further discouraged Chinese support. Beijing is now focused on recovering past loans rather than extending new ones.

Prof Vladimir Rouvinski believes China is willing to negotiate with any future government, fearing negative consequences if it supports Maduro too strongly.

The 2024 presidential election, marred by fraud allegations, further highlights the lack of internal support for Maduro. The opposition, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, claims their candidate, Edmundo González, won.

Prof Rouvinski states, "Maduro is alone, and his time is running out. Russia and China may criticize US intervention, but they won't go further. The support he once had is now just rhetorical."

So, is Venezuela truly abandoned by its strongest allies? The situation is complex, and the future of Maduro's regime remains uncertain. What do you think? Should allies provide more than just symbolic support? The floor is open for discussion.
