Hispanic Population Booms in Rural South Dakota: Plankinton's Story (2026)

In the heart of South Dakota, a small town named Plankinton is experiencing a remarkable transformation. With a population of just 768, it has become a thriving hub for the Hispanic community, boasting a significant 21% Hispanic population. This is a stark contrast to the state's overall Hispanic population, which hovers around 4%. The town's churches are adapting by offering Spanish-language services and investing in interpretation technology. The elementary school has embraced the challenge by implementing an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, a rarity for its size. Non-Hispanic residents are also stepping up, with plans to launch adult Spanish classes to bridge the communication gap with their Hispanic neighbors.

This trend is not isolated to Plankinton. Huron, located 60 miles north, is the county seat of Beadle County, which leads the state in Hispanic population. However, Aurora County, where Plankinton resides, follows closely behind with a significant Hispanic presence. As rural areas embrace diversity, community members are uniting to provide essential services for those who primarily speak Spanish.

The benefits of this diversity are becoming increasingly apparent. Ivan Romero, vice president of the Sioux Falls-based South Dakota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, highlights the improved access to services in Spanish. In the past, language barriers made it challenging to access healthcare, daily necessities, and other essential services. Now, the Hispanic population is not just limited to cooks; it includes professionals such as attorneys, real estate agents, doctors, CPAs, and accountants who speak Spanish and cater to the wider community.

Worship services have become a focal point for community gatherings. Herman Perez, a native of Puerto Rico, has established Iglesia Renuevo, a Spanish-language church, in partnership with Sunnycrest United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls and the United Methodist Church of Plankinton. These services attract people from surrounding communities, with attendance ranging from 10 to 80 people. Plankinton's welcoming atmosphere and availability of Spanish-friendly services have made it a preferred gathering spot for Hispanic individuals from smaller nearby towns.

Despite the growing population, integration challenges persist. Romero emphasizes the importance of collaboration between Hispanic and non-Hispanic individuals beyond cultural events. He believes that Hispanic voices should be included in decision-making processes throughout the year, not just during specific months. Immigration enforcement efforts, while causing some fear, have surprisingly fostered a sense of unity within the community.

However, the Hispanic community is facing economic challenges due to the enforcement measures. Hispanic-owned businesses report a decline in business activity as community members reduce leisure outings. Romero urges non-Hispanic residents to support these businesses by patronizing local Mexican, Hispanic, and ethnic restaurants. He highlights the ripple effect of these actions, emphasizing the importance of community support to sustain local businesses and their employees.

Romero acknowledges the changing role of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which is now advocating for business growth and community integration. Perez, inspired by Plankinton's success, envisions expanding services to more areas of the state. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work with the Hispanic community in Plankinton, highlighting the positive impact it has on all residents.
