While the Toronto Blue Jays were initially considered the favorites, their recent spending spree might have altered the landscape. With outfield vacancies and greater financial flexibility, the Mets are now in a strong position, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith.
Nicholson-Smith stated, "At one point, the Blue Jays looked like the best candidate to give Kyle Tucker a long term deal. Now I would say that’s the Mets. Because if you look at the Mets roster, they have Tyrone Taylor starting on one outfield spot on their projection. They have Carson Benge starting on one of their other outfield spots."
But here's where it gets interesting... Nicholson-Smith believes the Mets' favorable position is largely due to the evolving market dynamics, particularly concerning the Blue Jays. While the Blue Jays still have their sights set on players like Tucker and Bo Bichette, financial realities could be tipping the scales in the Mets' favor.
The Blue Jays have already invested approximately $350 million this winter, following an aggressive free-agent spending period, as pointed out by Nicholson-Smith. This includes deals for Dylan Cease (seven years, $210 million), third baseman Kazuma Okamoto from Japan (four years, $60 million), former Mets reliever Tyler Rogers (three years, $37 million), starter Cody Ponce (three years, $30 million), and starter Shane Bieber, who opted in for another year at $16 million.
And this is the part most people miss... This financial commitment opens a window of opportunity for the Mets, who have more financial wiggle room and a clear need in the outfield. Currently, the Mets' outfield depth chart features only Tyrone Taylor and Juan Soto, with their No. 2 prospect, Carson Benge, potentially joining them (MLB Pipeline).
