Norovirus Outbreak Causes Illness in Over 100 Guangdong Students
Health officials in Foshan, Guangdong province, confirmed on Saturday that a recent cluster of illnesses at Xinghui Senior High School, affiliated with CCNU, was caused by norovirus, affecting 103 students. All students are reported to be in stable condition, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Norovirus is a common virus that triggers acute gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the province experiences a seasonal peak in norovirus infections from October through March.
Schools and kindergartens are identified as high-risk areas for the occurrence and transmission of such outbreaks. Upon identifying the situation, local health and disease control authorities promptly initiated an emergency response.
Teams were dispatched to the school to conduct epidemiological investigations, provide professional disinfection guidance, and coordinate administrative measures. The authorities are also guiding the school to enhance its health education initiatives, disseminating preventive knowledge and promoting healthy living habits among students and staff through various channels.
In addition, the school has implemented a contingency plan, which includes comprehensive campus disinfection and strict adherence to daily health monitoring protocols, such as morning and afternoon checks, as well as rigorous tracking of student absences due to illness. This proactive approach aims to prevent further spread and ensure the well-being of the student body.
This incident highlights the importance of early detection and response to norovirus outbreaks in educational institutions, emphasizing the need for comprehensive health education and preventive measures to safeguard the health of students and staff.
